I should have known I was going to bob my hair while watching “An American in Paris” for the first time recently.
It’s pretty difficult to watch that movie without longing to become Leslie Caron’s chirpy character, Lise Bouvier. Acquiring her carefree joie de vivre and note-perfect ballet skills would take much more time and effort than stealing her haircut — so, like Bernice, it was time to bob my hair.
I’ve bobbed my hair in the past, but always seemed to lack the right vision and determination (and hair products) to embrace its full curly glory.
But finally! After sizing up the state of my hair and realizing that only a few inches separated it from possibly becoming the chic bob I’ve both feared and desired (and a special thank you Claudia Winkleman for reminding me that bangs go really well with turtlenecks), I decided to show my hairdresser the inspiration photos I’d been mulling over for months. She cut my curls into a fuck ass bob, or at least I believe that’s what they’re calling it these days, and to say I love it would be an understatement. It makes all my outfits make sense! I didn’t need new clothes. I needed a bob.
This bob has helped me articulate something about my style I had yet to understand — an androgynous element that I sometimes aim for but don’t always achieve. It adds lightness to dense outfits, balancing the scales as they’re weighed down by thick wool sweaters and baggy jeans.
I know a lot of us are trying to buy less and do more with what we own. Maybe a new hairstyle will unlock another lens through which to view your style and wardrobe? Or maybe I’m just riding a good haircut high.
Hooray for the bob. I’m a newish subscriber wondering where you find your Issey Miyake & The Row pieces. I’m hoping you’ll point me to a magic cavern with many pieces (esp Miyake), prices under $250, and free returns. You can do that, right?!

A new haircut can change everything! I love your new bob, and as usual, I love all of your outfits, too.
